  • Having a lettermail slot template is a great tool to confirm you pass the 20mm slot prior to the trip to the post office.  You can buy one here on the Slotbox website or visit the RESOURCE page for more options.

  • YES, thats a great option if you want to skip the line and say goodbye to those trips to the post office by purchasing a small digital kitchen scale and an assortment of postal stamps.

You can weigh and place postage on your packages yourself. Visit the RESOURCE tab or BLOG for stamp combinations.

You can find a decent scale in the range of $20 -$40. Canadian Tire has them on sale often.

Purchase a lettermail template, scale, and postal stamps and you will be an e-commerce champion seller!

  • The “Slot of Doom” Canada Post 20mm size restriction refers too / exists for the sorting equipment of mail in the processing plants…not the slot size of the receptacles for deposit.

Canada Post designed the community hubs to accept “Standard Lettermail” ie: a birthday card, but not accept “Non-standard/Oversize”.

Know you options. You can deposit your Oversize mail at your local post office or in the large mail street receptacles.

  • As a requirement of “Machinable Mail” the Canada Post website says that lettermail boxes be placed in an envelope or mailer to cover the sharp corners of the box.

The envelope allows for the machines to accept boxes with ease and is a safeguard measure to contain the contents in the event a box became open. If you wish to mail box without an envelope, please have a CP associate accept your item into their system.

Note: The small box is smaller than the minimum size requirement for Oversize lettermail. Place the small box in an envelope big enough to meet the length 140mm x 90mm width requirements.

An up-side is that customers love a gift box and by sending in an envelope the box has a chance of reuse instead of going straight to recycle bin. Its win win.

  • The Canada Post website states that all Lettermail - standard and oversize, destined for the USA or beyond is not to contain any items/products. Paper documents only. You can still use the box to safely send your product, but it will be sent as a parcel service like small packet / tracked packet.

That being said, the Slotbox is your sturdy little mailing buddy, so as boxes go, you can certainly use it to safely send small items across borders and internationally.

  • A folded box that is properly folded and taped shut is 18.5 mm and easily has wiggle room for the thickness of an envelope.

    Slide the box through a

20mm template before packing it to ensure it was folded correctly. Then pack the box.

if you find the box getting stuck on the corner going through the slot template, gently tamp edge down with hammer

If you find the box getting stuck in the middle going through the slot template, try removing some of your packing material and/or rearrange your items.( ie: take stud earrings off the card hanger, use less tissue paper etc… ) -  and try again.

The Slotbox works for 100’s of Canadians daily, but if can not preform miracles! If your product is too big it will have to be sent as a parcel service.

  • The SLOTBOX is made of 32ECT - E Flute cardboard and comprised of 45%-60% recycled content. The variance of recycled content will alter the cardboard from batch to batch. The board is Industry rated for a crush strength of 32lbs per inch edge strength. It may appear different in colour or in rigidity, but all E flute recycled board is plenty strong for the intended use of the box.
